Political parties grieve the passing of Connie Chiume
Political parties have commended veteran actress Connie Chiume, who died on Tuesday, for her significant contributions to the creative industry.
Following the unexpected death of veteran actress Connie Chiume, political parties have extended their condolences to her family and loved ones.
Chiume, 72, passed away on Tuesday, 6 August, at Garden City Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital for a medical procedure.
POLITICAL PARTIES MOURN THE DEATH OF CONNIE CHIUME
Born in Welkom, Free State, Chiume rose to fame when she appeared in the popular South African television series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa.
With a career spanning over 40 years, Chiume graced the television screens in many homes as she appeared in popular productions such as Zone14, Rhythm City, and Gomora.
In 2018, Chiume starred in the Marvel Studios film Black Panther and also appeared in Beyoncé’s Disney musical film based on The Lion King, where she played Simba’s mother, Sarabi.
Following her passing, ANC spokesperson in Gauteng, Lesego Makhubela, said Chiume made stellar contributions to the development of the creative sector, working with both government and civil society for the benefit of all.
Makhubela said multi award-winning actress would be remembered for her warmth, unifying spirit, ardent love for young people, and zeal for a better society.
“Her passing is a significant loss to the movement, the creative industry, and the country. We dip our revolutionary banner in honour of this humble and soft-spoken patriot, selfless advocate and mentor in the creative industry, and instrument of social change who served the people of South Africa in various capacities, including through the Connie Chiume Foundation, until her demise.
“We do not doubt that Connie Chiume’s life and work will continue to inspire young and future generations of artists,” Makhubela said.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said Chiume was a true icon who travelled the African continent spreading her talent.
“Our deepest condolences to the family of this icon, the friends and fellow townspeople in Welkom, and the entire entertainment industry. The struggle to liberate the sector continues,” the party said.
The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng said Connie belongs to the class of courageous South African women who dedicated their lives to bettering the lives of others through various leadership initiatives and her volunteer work.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) also expressed sadness over Chiume’s passing.
