South Africa’s national police commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, has not only applauded two Westville police officers for their bravery… but called them to congratulate them personally. The men’s dedication to their jobs and protecting South Africans from criminals was caught on camera, after an armed robbery at a post office in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) yesterday.
Speaking during his visit to the North West Province, General Sitole said: “The response displayed by our two police officers was exceptionally patriotic and selfless to say the least.
“I personally called and congratulated both colleagues this morning for their unwavering determination and highly commendable bravery.”
He said the police officers, despite being outnumbered and overpowered (the robbers reportedly had AK47s), remained relentless throughout the gun-battle and fatally wounded a 34-year-old suspect.
Other suspects managed to escape, although it is believed that two suspects may have been wounded during the shout out, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).
A Z88 pistol, with the serial number filed off, was recovered at the scene.
Shortly afterwards the bakkie was found abandoned and burning at 28th Avenue in Clermont, west of Durban. This vehicle had been reported hi-jacked in Malvern in July this year.
