Western Cape political party People’s Movement for Change (PMC) has called on Sassa to reopen all offices that they have closed in the Atlantis community, saying failing which they will organise a mass protest.

Residents in Atlantis who are serviced by the office have been left in limbo after the facility closed down due to occupational health and safety issues.

The office assisted residents with child grants, old age grants and disability grants applications.

Sassa Western Cape spokesperson Shivani Wahab said the office was currently closed due to occupational health and safety issues at the site.

OFFICE CLOSED DUE TO OCCUPATIONAL AND SAFETY ISSUES

“The Sassa Atlantis Office is currently closed due to occupational health and safety issues at the site.

Sassa is in the process of identifying an alternate site from which to render services in Atlantis. Details of the new site will be communicated in due course,” she said.

City of Cape Town Proportional representation (PR) councillor in Atlantis Anastatia Davids said she was inundated with complaints.

She said residents now have to borrow money to travel outside Atlantis to access Sassa services.

THE PMC SAID THE COMMUNITY WAS UPSET

People’s Movement for Change (PMC) founder member Sammy Claassen said the community was angry and upset with the current situation.

Claassen said the closure of the office has  left the affected pensioners, children, disabled and the Sassa beneficiaries stranded and frustrated without any social support or grants.

“The situation is totally unacceptable. Government services must serve the community at all times. Intergovernmental relations and disputes should not affect our people negatively

This lack of social services is putting the people of Atlantis at risk. We condemn this disconnection and lack of services.

We call for the immediate opening of the SASSA offices. If these officers are not opened up then the PMC will be left with no other option but to mobilise for a massive protest action against the lack of services in Atlantis,” Claassen said.
