These days, many shoppers are forced to pinch pennies and save where they can. The high cost of living has definitely left millions more desperate than ever. It looks like some people are now taking to their literal piggy banks to retrieve the money they saved in case of a rainy day. In a video that has gone viral on social media, one customer can be seen paying for his grocery items with stacks of coins.

The video left many laughing — and a little saddened — to see what shopping for essentials has come to.

SHOPPER PAYS WITH STACKS OF COINS [WATCH]

Currently, in South Africa, many people are being forced to smash their piggy banks to retrieve the little they had saved to survive.

A recent study by major bank FNB found that most customers spend up to 80% of their salary within the first few days after getting paid.

By the middle of the month, most people are scraping together pennies to get by.

One man sadly proved this after he was seen paying for his grocery shopping using what appears to be hundreds of 10c and 20c coins.

The video appears to have been taken at Shoprite and shows a cashier patiently counting along.

The shopping line also appears to be quite long, but those behind the shopper don’t appear to mind too much. Take a look at the clip below:

While many found the video fun, it was also a shocking indication of how things are going for most people in the country.

The clip received over 46 000 views.
