Peanut butter products recalled over aflatoxin concerns

The NCC issued a recall urging consumers to return peanut butter brands made by House of Natural Butters due to contamination.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a recall notice. It urges consumers to return various peanut butter brands manufactured by House of Natural Butters.

Acting Commissioner Thezi Mabuza revealed that the manufacturer notified the Commission of higher than legally acceptable levels of Aflatoxin in products distributed under Pick n Pay’s No Name brand, Eden All Natural brand, Wazoogles Superfoods, and Dischem’s Lifestyle brand.

THE RECALLED PEANUT BUTTER PRODUCTS

The recalled products include Dischem’s Lifestyle 400 grams Smooth and Crunchy, Dischem’s Lifestyle 800 grams Smooth and Crunchy, Wazoogles Superfoods (all sizes from 32g to 20kg), Pick n’ Pay’s No Name 1kg Smooth, and Eden All Natural.

Mabuza emphasised the nationwide distribution of Pick n Pay, Eden All Natural, and Dischem’s Lifestyle brands, while Wazoogles Superfoods primarily circulated in the Western Cape.

“Pick n Pay, Eden All Natural, and Dischem’s Lifestyle brands were distributed nationally, while Wazoogles Superfoods products were distributed mainly in the Western Cape,” Mabuza said.

Consumers should immediately stop consuming these products and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund, regardless of proof of purchase.

While investigating House of Natural Butters (Pty) Ltd, Mabuza stated that the NCC will conduct a nationwide assessment. This will determine if other brands are affected.

Mabuza stressed compliance with regulations, urging manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers to conduct urgent safety tests and take corrective measures if necessary.

Aflatoxin exposure may result in health issues such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Mabuza reiterated the responsibility of manufacturers, importers, and retailers to ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards.

The commission urges South African consumers to prioritise safety. Promptly return the recalled products for a full refund, with or without proof of purchase.
