PRETORIA – A parole board in South Africa is to meet on Monday to determine whether Oscar Pistorius should be released early from prison, according to news reports.
Pistorius, who was found guilty last year of culpable homicide for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was due to leave prison in August to serve the rest of his five-year sentence under house arrest. However, Justice Minister Michael Masutha blocked the release saying the parole board had made a mistake by approving the parole before Pistorius had served a sixth of his sentence.
A board meeting in Durban two weeks ago ended without the panel of legal experts making a decision, and the matter was postponed.
“The hearing will go ahead on Monday,” correctional services spokesman Manelisi Wolela was quoted as saying in news reports.
