NSRI confirms death of missing fisherman near Cape Point
The NSRI has confirmed that after an extensive search for a missing fisherman, the man was found to have drowned near Cape Point.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Sunday confirmed that after an extensive search for a missing fisherman, the man was found to have drowned.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the tragic incident took place at Brightwaters on Saturday morning, on the Atlantic side of Cape Point.
Lambinon said two other male occupants of the boat which had capsized, raised the alarm and several emergency services teams were alerted.
DENSE FOG
The men reported that they had both managed to reach the shore after their boat capsized in the surf zone in dense fog, 1.5 nautical miles south of Olifantsbospunt.
They said their boat had then washed ashore, but they had found no signs of their skipper.
NSRI rescue vehicles from NSRI Kommetjie, NSRI Hout Bay and from NSRI Simonstown responded.
Lambinon said two NSRI Hout Bay rescue craft, Nadine Gordimer and Albie Matthews, were launched and responded.
“Metro Control activated the Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad “drone rescue unit” and NSRI alerted the SA Police Services (SAPS), SAPS Sea Borderline Control and SAPS’ Water Policing and Diving Services.”
‘RECOVERED ONTO THE NSRI RESCUE CRAFT’
He said the two male survivors, aged 17 and 29, were treated by paramedics and were transported to hospital where they were recovering.
“It appears that the casualty boat may have been swamped by a wave before running aground on the shoreline.
“During the search the body of the man was located approximately between 30 and 50 metres off-shore at Brightwaters and was recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft.”
Sadly, the 39-year-old man from Oceanview was declared deceased.
SA People extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased fisherman.
