Nine traffic officers arrested for corruption

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) announced the arrest of nine traffic officers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

In a significant pre-festive season crackdown on fraud and corruption, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) announced the arrest of nine traffic officers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Two officers from the Tshwane Metro Police Department were apprehended in Gauteng. After attempting to solicit a bribe of R1500 from a taxi driver.

WHAT LED TO THE OFFICERS ARREST?

Swift action by the RTMC’s National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU) led to a successful sting operation, resulting in the officers’ arrest. They are scheduled to appear in court today on corruption charges.

Meanwhile, seven officers, including five from the provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate and two from the Newcastle municipality, were arrested in a joint operation by NTACU and the Hawks in Newcastle.

The arrests followed public complaints about the conduct of traffic officials. An undercover operation revealed fraud and corruption, leading to the apprehension of the seven individuals.

The RTMC emphasised that these incidents underscore the ongoing battle against corruption in South Africa, particularly within law enforcement agencies.

The NTACU remains committed to eradicating corruption and rebuilding public trust in traffic law enforcement.

“It is important for citizens to report all corruption they witness or experience to ensure corrupt officials are brought to book,” said the RTMC.
