Transitioning to new service providers
The City of Tshwane has engaged new service providers to enhance waste collection services. The city assures residents that these new providers will improve the overall waste collection experience. Residents should place their bins outside on the morning of their designated collection day to ensure timely pickup.
Mayor Cilliers Brink emphasised the importance of this transition, stating, “We are working hard to provide value for the money you pay for city services.”
To ensure quality, the city has implemented three new rules for waste contractors: vehicles must be roadworthy, trucks must have tracking devices, and these rules apply to subcontractors as well.
Challenges and assurances
The transition to new waste collection providers has faced some obstacles. Brink revealed that about 60% of previous contractors were not retained due to non-compliance with new standards. This led to resistance and even violence at landfill sites, with city officials facing threats from those unable to meet the new requirements.
“Those who stand to benefit from you not getting value for money will fight back,” warned Brink. “We will not stand for it.”
The city remains committed to stabilising the waste collection system and asks for residents’ patience during this transition period.
