PRETORIA – In a nail-biting finish, all the votes from the capital city have been captured with the DA winning the most votes.
The results for Tshwane, which were finalised after 12pm, showed that the Democratic Alliance (DA) garnered 43.10% or 381 022 of the votes.
The ruling African National Congress followed closely with 41.48% or 366 732 votes and the EFF was at 11.64%.
The results indicate that both parties did not get the outright 50% majority in the metro council – meaning they both would require a coalition to govern the municipality.
This leaves the EFF in a good position should one of these two parties approach it to form a coalition.
In 2011, the ANC won the capital city with a total of 800 367 valid votes (55.32%) which ensured it secured 68 out of 105 ward seats and 118 out of 210 seats in total.
Johannesburg also continues to hang in the balance with both the ANC and the DA votes neck and neck.
At noon, the ANC was leading in the City of Johannesburg with 42.47% of the votes and the DA had 40.87%.
The Electoral Commission has been slow to release some of the results at the National Results Operation Centre in Tshwane.
The delay in the finalisation of the results in Gauteng has been attributed to the extensive auditing process as well as the high number of voters in the province.
The commission is scheduled to officially announce the election results tonight. –SAnews.gov.za
