More than 300,000 households in Gauteng face the risk of losing electricity

More than 300,000 households in Gauteng could lose access to electricity if they don’t update their prepaid meters by the deadline.

As the 24 November deadline nears, 382,029 households in Gauteng are at risk of losing electricity access if they fail to recode their prepaid meters. Eskom has urged all customers to update their meters to the new Key Revision Number (KRN) 2, a requirement that will ensure they can continue to load electricity tokens. Failure to do so will result in meters becoming inoperable.

Deadline firm, no extensions for updating prepaid meters

Eskom confirmed there will be no extensions to the deadline, leaving affected households with just a few weeks to act. As of now, only 469 171 out of 851 200 customers in Gauteng have successfully recoded their meters.

“Failure to recode by the deadline will prevent customers from loading electricity tokens, rendering their meters inoperable,” Eskom warned in a statement.

Despite confusion in some areas, including reports from City Power, the utility remains firm on the 24 November deadline.

The consequences of missing the deadline are clear: customers will no longer be able to load tokens, effectively cutting off their electricity supply. This update affects approximately 6.9 million prepaid meters across Eskom-supplied areas.

DIY Process to avoid disconnection

Eskom has made the recoding process as simple as possible. Around 97% of meters have already been prepared for a quick Do-It-Yourself (DIY) update. Customers need to purchase tokens from authorised vendors, which come with two sets of 20-digit codes to input into their meters. Once entered, the meters will be updated to KRN 2, ensuring continued access to electricity.

To increase awareness, Eskom has ramped up its public outreach, including radio announcements and local engagement sessions.

“Eskom is intensifying its awareness campaign to ensure all customers are informed and encourages those who have not yet recoded their meters to act quickly to avoid service disruptions,” said Eskom.

Support teams can assist customers who may face difficulties completing the process.
