South Africa’s beautiful, stunning, head-turning, elegant Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi was crowned winner of the Miss Universe title at an event in Atlanta, USA, on Sunday night (early Monday morning SA time).
The win comes as no surprise to many South Africans who were dazzled by the Tsolo-born beauty’s smile the night she first won Miss South Africa.
And it’s yet another incredible international victory for South Africa – just a month after the Springboks took the Rugby World Cup.
On Monday the Springboks tweeted: “Wonderful news to wake up to on a Monday morning! Congratulations to @zozitunzi @Official_MissSA – we are immensely proud! ?? #StrongerTogether”
Zozi’s princesses are Mexico and Puerto Rico.

She is the third South African to become Miss Universe, after Margaret Gardiner (1978), and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (2017). Demi-Leigh tweeted: “SOUTH AFRICA, SHE DID IT!!!!! Congratulations @zozitunzi what a woman you are! Ps: I have a NYC to do list for you.”
Zozi’s proud Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane said in a statement:
“I want to join millions of South Africans, friends in other countries in congratulating Zozibini Tunzi for winning the Miss Universe 2019 crown.
“Zozibini Tunzi’s success at the Miss Universe 2019 competition is a victory that should inspire young girls from all rural villages that they too can be the best in what they do when they focus on it and work to achieve their goals.”
In Zozi’s statement at the Miss Universe contest she had said that she had grown up in a world where her skin colour and hair were never considered beautiful. “I think it is time that that stops today,” she said. “I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine. Thank you.” (See video here:)
