Minister Mchunu promises KwaXimba reliable water supply

Minister Senzo Mchunu has made a bold promise to the water-starved KwaXimba community to provide a reliable water supply.

After years of persistent water problems, the community of KwaXimba west of Durban, has been promised reliable water supply within three months.

Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, made the promise to frustrated residents who had been protesting for five days.

SHORT-TERM SOLUTION FOR KWAXIMBA COMMUNITY

According to the SABC, traditional leader Inkosi Simingaye Mlaba says taps in his home have been dry for years.

“I don’t even have water in my house, this needs to be addressed quickly because I don’t understand why we don’t have water in the area. We must all receive water regardless of political affiliation,” says Mlaba.

Power outages at the Midmar Dam and an increasing population is to blame for the water supply shortages.

The outage affected the entire western aqueduct supplied areas, including Hammersdale, Kloof, Gillits, Tshelimnyama, Dassenhoek, Inanda and Umzinyathi.

FIGHT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHT

Mchunu says residents should not be protesting for water which is a basic human right.

“We don’t want anybody to protest for water because water is a right. It is life. If we had our way, there would not be any need for any community to complain and protest

A two mega-liter per day package plant is currently being installed and is expected to be completed by 17 May. While a replacement five mega lite per day plant is expected to be completed at the end of June.
