Mervyn Dirks expelled by ANC after joining MK party
Dirks who was the ANC’s public representative in the KZN legislature was expelled by the party for joining uMkhonto We Sizwe political party.
Former ANC Member of Parliament (MP) in KwaZulu-Natal Mervyn Dirks, says he was not surprised by the letter informing him of his expulsion from the party on Monday.
Dirks was the ANC’s public representative in the KZN legislature, and was expelled by the party for joining uMkhonto We Sizwe (MK) political party, led by Jacob Zuma.
The party said Dirks admitted that he had joined the MK to the party’s provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo.
ANC TERMINATES DIRKS MEMBERSHIP WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT
The expulsion letter from the party read: “This letter serves to inform you that you have been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) because you have joined another political party.
This action taken against you because you have admitted this yourself to the Provincial Secretary who is the Chief Administrative Officer of the organisation in the province.
This means that your membership to the ANC is terminated with immediate effect, and you will no longer represent the ANC as a public representative in the KZN legislature.”

Dirks said on Monday he chose to join the MK party because the ANC was incapable of renewing itself.
“The ANC pays lip services to renewal. They shielded Ramaphosa from accountability in the Phala Phala matter.
The party is incapable of renewing itself. Renewal is a tool used in factional battles. The Judge Hlophe vote was the final straw for me,” he said.
FORMER ANC MPL READY TO CAMPAIGN FOR THE MK PARTY
Dirks said he was now ready to get on the campaign trail for the MK party.
“I feel more comfortable in a radical organisation consisting of religious leaders and traditional leaders.
MK subscribes to Radical Economic Transformation (RET) which I believe in. My departure from the ANC is not personal but ideological,” he said.
The ANC launched its election manifesto in Durban on Saturday, but Dirks said he did not attend.
“I did not want to go to listen to more election promises that will never come to fruition,” he said.
