The Magalies Water-run Klipdrift package plant, set to become one of the nation’s largest, remains on track to provide a reliable water supply to Hammanskraal residents by June next year.

A joint effort between the City of Tshwane and the National Department of Water and Sanitation is driving the initiative to address longstanding water challenges in the Hammanskraal.

KLIPDRIFT PLANT: 50 MEGALITRES OF WATER TO HAMMANSKRAAL BY JUNE 2025

With its capacity poised to more than double, the completion of the three-phase Klipdrift package plant by June 2025 will ensure the delivery of 50 mega litres per day to various parts of Hammanskraal.

This ambitious project not only pledges to meet water demands but also creates job opportunities for Hammanskraal locals. Plant upgrades include constructing sludge handling facilities and installing new water pipelines, connecting to Tshwane’s network and the troubled Temba Wastewater works.

During an oversight visit to the plant, Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu affirmed, “The first drop of water from this package plant we will see in September.”

LONG-TERM PLANT UPGRADE AIMS TO AVOID PAST MISTAKES

According to IOL, Brink stated the plant upgrade was a long-term endeavor, aiming to avoid past mistakes of appointing individuals implicated in state capture.

In February, Tshwane municipal manager Johann Mettler disclosed his request to the National Treasury to blacklist both NJR Projects and Blackhead Consulting, companies linked to businessman Edwin Sodi, from government contracts.

In 2019, Sodi secured a R295-million tender in a joint venture with CMS Water Engineering. However, the contract was terminated following a forensic report indicating only 60 percent completion by 2022.

CHOLERA OUTBREAK CLAIMING OVER 20 LIVES

The cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal last year highlighted the severe repercussions of inadequate water supply, resulting in over 20 fatalities and numerous hospitalisations.

IOL reported that, an independent commission’s findings unveiled mismanagement of funds allocated for critical water infrastructure upgrades.
