Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says Vodacom’s decision to appeal the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) judgement in favour of its former employee, and Please Call Me inventor Nkosana Makate is unnecessary.

This comes as the SCA ruled in favour of Makate and ordered Vodacom to make a new offer to its former employee within 30 days.

JULIUS MALEMA SLAMS VODACOM

Makate and Vodacom have been in and out of court for over a decade due to disagreements regarding the compensation he deserves.

In 2022, the Gauteng High Court ordered Vodacom to pay Makate 5% of the total voice revenue generated from his invention. She stipulated the period from March 2001 to March 2021, not the five years calculated by Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub. The corporate giant appealed the ruling.

Malema took to X to voice his opinion on the matter.

The leader of the Red Berets said it was high time Vodacom stopped its nonsense and took full responsibility.

“What started as a simple transactional dispute between two parties has become a national irritation because they think they can bully him. Appealing to the ConCourt to fight the SCA ruling in favour of Makate is entirely unnecessary. Please don’t say we are not nice people, be warned,” he wrote.

NKOSANA MAKATE WEIGHS IN ON THE LATEST JUDGEMENT

In an interview with the SABC, Makata said Vodacom’s strategy to out-litigate him throughout the courts is obvious.

Makate said negotiations with the company were a big joke as they would not even agree to the smallest things.

“Justice (Aubrey) Ledwaba, last year, issued a long-standing judgement. He also complains about the frustration of court orders by this corporate giant. I mean, it looks like it’s a pattern that they have chosen to adopt, and they are willing to die with it,” he said.
