Malema calls for Orania’s abolition, pledges to act

EFF leader has committed to taking steps to dismantle Orania, the all-white town in South Africa located on private land.

Julius Malema is leading the charge against Orania, South Africa’s whites-only town, calling on his EFF supporters to take a stand.

Malema argues that the actions of the Afrikaner community undermine national unity and perpetuate ideologies tied to Apartheid.

Located in the Northern Cape, the community of just 3000 individuals was built on private property in 1963. It is self-sufficient, with its businesses, schools, hospitals, and even currency.

EFF Set to Demonstrate for the End of Orania

On Friday, 11 April, EFF leader Julius Malema held a meeting with representatives from the Orania Movement and the Freedom Front Plus to discuss the government’s position on Orania’s right to self-determination.
The talks ended in deadlock, with Malema vowing to rally EFF supporters for a march to Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul’s office in Kimberley on 22 April.

Shadrack Tlhaole, the EFF provincial chairperson, commented on their stance regarding Orania: “The EFF is raising a profound fundamental issue that needs both black and white people to speak to it because they agreed that there should be a generation that will engage and speak about their existence to make sure that we don’t speak past each other.

“We are continuing with our march to the premier’s office, demanding what we have said, and that will continue.

“Orania should be abolished, and Orania is not what we should appreciate and accept as the EFF”.

THUMBS UP FROM GAYTON MCKENZIE

Although Julius Malema has expressed strong disapproval of Orania, Gayton McKenzie, leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has openly praised the Afrikaner-only town.
In 2023, McKenzie visited Orania to meet with local leaders and gain a deeper understanding of the community.

He later shared a detailed thread on X, outlining his conclusions:

  • Orania is a white-only town. Black people are not allowed to buy land or stay there. According to leaders, this is a means to “preserve” the Afrikaaner culture.
  • The town does not permit any embers of the LGBTQ community to enter the town.
  • The population is about 3000 people, and residents thrive on keeping the town clean.
  • Orania has its own currency -Ora – and even its own registered bank and flag.
  • The town has multiple thriving businesses which employ residents
  • It is self-sufficient, with its own schools, factories, and hospitals.
  • Afrikaans is the only language spoken and taught.
  • Despite having a small population, the town has “futuristic” financial practices.
