Lion spotted roaming free in Mpumalanga Province
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency confirmed on Wednesday that a male lion has escaped from its enclosure in Mbombela.
The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) confirmed on Wednesday that a male lion has escaped from its enclosure in Mbombela. Authorities are advising residents to remain alert as efforts to track the lion, last spotted near The Rest Estate, are underway.
Lion’s Last Sighting Near the Rest Estate
MTPA spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube says the lion’s last sighting was recorded on Wednesday afternoon through security footage from The Rest Estate.
“This is confirmed by security footage obtained from The Rest Estate control room,” Shungube stated.
He explained that the MTPA team has been working tirelessly since early Wednesday morning to track the animal.
Search Operation Ongoing
Equipped with a thermal imaging drone, MTPA officials have been searching for the area since 2:00 on Wednesday but have yet to locate the lion. Shungube emphasised that the agency would continue its efforts until the animal was safely found.
“The MTPA has been on the scene since 2:00 (on Wednesday) with a thermal imaging drone trying to locate the lion, so far without success,” he noted.
Public Advised to Remain Calm and Report Sightings
Authorities advise residents to remain calm, stay alert, and report any sightings.
“The public is advised to remain calm, be vigilant, and alert the authorities if they see the lion,” Shungube added.
