The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is providing financial relief to struggling families through its Children’s Grant for August 2024.

SASSA Children’s grants for August 2024 are part of the purview of the Department of Social Development, which has just been appointed a new Minister and deputy. Encouragingly, Minister Sisisi Tolashe has a background in the Office of the Presidency caring for children and people with disabilities, so she should have the best interests of the needy top of mind.

Below, we will explain the three different childcare SASSA grants disbursed by the agency that may be applicable to you and your child. Plus, any and all documents you will need to make a successful application for a monthly child grant first time. Then, we will outline the latest updated information on payment dates and how to contact SASSA.

SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS FOR AUGUST 2024

Firstly, you should know there are three different types of SASSA Children’s grants for August 2024. By knowing what they are, you’ll be able to make a better case in your application for financial assistance with the agency. Firstly, and by far the most prevalent in the country, is the Child Support Grant. This pays out R530 per month to approximately 13-million residents. So, why can’t you be next if you’re struggling to make ends meet?

To qualify for the SASSA Child Support Grant, you must prove that your child is younger than 18-years old, and you have to pass the all-important means test. This is so people don’t take advantage of government grants for children they don’t have or receive extra money if they already earn enough. Therefore, in your application to SASSA, you will have to prove that your income is less than R4 400 per month if single. Or R8 800 per month if you’re married. This equates to R52 800 and R105 600 per annum, respectively.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR A GRANT?

Those are the main criteria for the majority of SASSA Children’s grants for August 2024. However, it should be noted that applicants can only have one grant running at a time. And only one grant per child. Therefore, you cannot have Child Support and Foster Child or Older Person’s benefit coming your way at the same time. Likewise, you and your aunty and your cousin cannot all apply for child support of the same minor. This is against agency policy. And your child cannot be cared for in a state institution either.

Your application can take up to three months to be approved. However, if and when it is, your SASSA Children’s grants will be paid in full and backdated to the date of your application. Be sure to supply the following documents for SASSA Children’s grants for August 2024, so your application is not denied/delayed:

  • A certified copy of the you (the applicant’s) ID.
  • Certified copy of the child’s ID and/or birth certificate.
  • Certified evidence of spousal relationship/marital status (marriage certificate, divorce decree, death certificate, etc).
  • Certified copy of the spouse’s ID (if married).
  • Declaration of proof of income for the means test.
  • Certified copy of three-month bank statement as confirmation of banking details.
  • If you have no income, an affidavit attesting to that is required.
  • Evidence that the applicant is the child’s primary caregiver.
  • Proof of your child’s school attendance.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER CHILDCARE GRANTS?

The other two SASSA Children’s grants for August 2024 are called Child Care Dependency (for disabled children) and Foster Child support, if you’re the court-appointed foster parent of a minor. Child Care Dependency currently pays R2 180 and Foster Child R1 180 per month.

The basic requirements of each are broadly the same as stated above for Child Support. However, you will have to prove to the agency through a doctor’s note of any mental or physical disability. And have court-appointed proof of being a foster parent, in accordance with the South African Child Care Act.
