Last witness testifies in trial within the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial

The last witness in the trial within the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial will testify on Friday, 2 February at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

The last State witness in the trial within the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is currently testifying at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Dr Thabang Hlokwe is a dentist that examined accused 2 Bongani Ntanzi on the dates between his two alleged confessions.

LAST WITNESS TESTIFIES AT THE SENZO MEYIWA MURDER TRIAL

The trial within a trial seeks to determine the admissibility of confessions allegedly made by accused 1 Muzi Sibiya and accused 2 Bongani Ntanzi who are among the five men accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa was shot at the home of his then girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo on 26 October 2014 in Vosloorus.

Defence counsel for accused 1 and 2, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu insists that the alleged confessions were made under duress and that his clients were tortured. However, the State has brought in several key witnesses including lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda, Vivienne Cronje a Magistrate at Boksburg who took down Ntanzi’s confession statement and other police officers who transported Sibiya and Ntanzi when they were arrested.

ALLEGED CONFESSION INADMISSIBLE AS EVIDENCE

In October 2023, Presiding judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng ruled that Ntanzi’s alleged confession recorded by magistrate Vivienne Cronje is inadmissible as evidence.

As previously reported by The South African, Cronje took the witness stand and told the court that she took down Ntanzi’s confession statement on 24 June 2020 in the presence of his lawyer and an interpreter. She added that she recorded Ntanzi without the other parties being made aware.

Five men are on trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the murder of the soccer star, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli.

They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All five men pleaded not guilty.

The trial continues.
