The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (KZN DBE) is advising students to refrain from organizing or participating in “pens down” parties.

These events are traditionally organized by Grade 12 learners to celebrate the end of their final exams but are increasingly associated with tragic outcomes.

Risks Associated with Pens Down Parties

Pens down parties are often associated with reckless behavior. Public drinking, vandalism, and inappropriate actions, such as tearing or writing on school uniforms, are common at these events.

Above all, the department warns that such actions undermine respect, responsibility, and key values taught in schools, as reported by IOL.

Tragedy Strikes

The dangers of pens down parties were highlighted by the countless amounts of tragedies. In December last year, three matriculants from Mnyanande Secondary School lost their lives in a car crash while returning from a pens down party.

The victims, identified as 19-year-old Thandokuhle Khumalo, 18-year-old Anele Majola, and 18-year-old Luyanda Vilakazi, died just days after completing their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

Three other learners involved in the accident were taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Lessons from Previous Incidents

The department also referenced the 2022 Enyobeni Tavern tragedy, where 21 young lives were lost at a pens down party. The tavern owners were convicted for selling alcohol to minors, further highlighting the risks of these events.

Responsible Celebrations Encouraged

While finishing exams is a significant milestone, the KZN DBE stresses the importance of celebrating responsibly. Learners are encouraged to commemorate their achievements with dignity and respect for themselves and their communities.

Parents, Guardians And Communities Must Work Together

Parents and guardians play a vital role in preventing unsafe parties. Hosting celebrations under adult supervision can help learners avoid harmful situations. The department warns that reckless party behavior can have devastating, lifelong consequences.

The KZN DBE calls on schools, families, and community leaders to collaborate in discouraging unsafe parties. By prioritizing safety, they can ensure that learners celebrate their achievements without endangering themselves or others.

Safety Over Celebration

The department’s message is clear: safety must come first. Learners’ actions during celebrations reflect not only on themselves but also on their families and schools.

Pens down parties should not overshadow the hard work and dedication learners have shown throughout the year. Instead, celebrations should uphold the values of respect, responsibility, and safety.
