KZN Driver’s Licence programme secures first 4000 beneficiaries
The Driver’s Licence Programme aimed at empoering underprivileged and unemployed youth of KZN has secured it’s first 4000 beneficiaries.
The Driver’s Licence Programme, by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, aims to empower the unemployed by providing essential skills for the job market.
This comprehensive initiative will support 4000 individuals with learners’ and drivers’ licences alongside job preparation. Furthermore, it aims to enhance their prospects for employment and economic independence.

The programme, dubbed Thuthuka Driver Training, aims to assist individuals of all age groups in obtaining driver’s licences. Additionally, this initiative seeks to enhance mobility and employment opportunities for participants.
After receiving an overwhelming response of over 50 000 applications from the public, the Department concluded a rigorous and transparent selection process. This process finalised the first batch of 4000 beneficiaries from all districts of KwaZulu-Natal.
MEC APPLAUDS DRIVER’S LICENCE PROGRAMME
“This programme is essential in preparing unemployed people for employment. It will assist the young and old – but mostly the unemployed graduates,” stated MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka.
“We are also pleased with the role and partnership with the driving school industry because it means we will produce drivers that are competent and fit to be on the road.”
By collaborating with the driving school industry, the Department ensures that selected applicants actively engage with accredited driving schools. Consequently, these schools must meet specified criteria.
This partnership seeks to formalise the relationship between the Department and the driving school industry.
KZN PREMIER LAUNCHES THUTHUKA DRIVER TRAINING
KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, will officially launch the Thuthuka Driver Training (driver’s licence) programme at the Durban Exhibition Centre on Friday, 1 March.
This initiative signifies the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of its citizens. It also fosters partnerships to enhance road safety and employment prospects.
