PRETORIA – South African President Jacob Zuma visited the communities around the Garden Route today, which have been affected by the devastating fires. He was left visibly shocked and said it was “the worst disaster I have ever experienced”.
The President was accompanied by a delegation of ministers and deputy ministers, as well as Western Cape Premier Helen Zille – who was cheered and embraced, as she toyi-toyied with residents. Watch below.
The President and his delegation visited the communities of Knysna Heights and Wit Lokasie where 10,000 people have been displaced as the raging fires destroyed more than 400 structures and killed seven people, including one firefighter.
The Presidency said that early last week, the President dispatched humanitarian and other support to all the affected areas, especially the poor communities.
President Zuma is also scheduled to attend the funeral service of the late volunteer firefighter Bradley Richard in Plettenburg Bay, who died while assisting the firefighters.
Several cabinet ministers visited the areas on Wednesday where they brought relief and assistance, as well as spoke to the firefighters. – SAnews.gov.za
