Johannesburg woman’s water restored, but it’s blue
A Johannesburg woman felt relieved when her water supply was restored, but she was caught off guard by what flowed from her tap.
Water supply is gradually being restored to Johannesburg homes, but one household was shocked by what flowed from their tap when the water came back.
A resident took to social media to share her experience with other TikTok users on 18 December 2024. In the video, one can see that the water is not the usual clear colour it should be, but more of a blue shade. Check out the video below.
BLUE WATER COMES OUT OF WOMAN’S TAP
A woman from Linden, Randburg, had blue water coming out of her tap yesterday. The TikTok user with the handle @annegrayrsa posted a clip showing its colour and shared how skeptical she was about using it. She wrote in the caption: “Day 5 The water is starting to come though but I don’t trust it.”
REACTION TO THE VIDEO
The video received numerous responses from the app’s users. The comment section was filled with mixed reactions from South Africans, with some making jokes about the colour. Here are some of the comments.
“It just came back OUT OF THE BLUE.”
“Ke powerade.”
“That’s Woolworths water.”
“DA water.”
Others lamented that they still didn’t have it and would be happy having it even if it was blue.
“Not us in Roodepoort. I wish I had blue water now. Yoh the desperation!”
“Our water is not back yet. I would take the blue water without question.”
“I’m just happy we can flush…blue, pink purple… I’ll take it like that.”
“At this point I would appreciate that blue water week 3 in without water like what is this life we are living?”
POSSIBLE EXPLANATION TO THE COLOUR
One of the commenters actually gave a possible explanation to why it was blue. She wrote: “Does your toilet have one of those blue thingies in the cistern? If so, it’s because of that. When there is no water in the pipes, it can backwash from the cistern back into the pipes. This happened.”
Someone else agreed with the explanation and said it happened to them as well, while another was just grossed out by the idea.
“You might be right, it has happened to me once but from the bathroom tap not the kitchen.”
“I’m not sure whether to laugh or take this serious but if you were joking, this is a good one. If you serious then I’m disgusted.”
The South African reported on 20 December 2024 that Johannesburg has promised that all residents would have supply “by Christmas”. The City said it was hoping that all the areas affected by the 86-hour shutdown would have water in their homes by Friday.
