IEB maintains 98% pass rate
2023 IEB examination results are out. Take a look at the overall performance of the 15 146 learners who sat down for the end of year exams.
The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) 2023 matric class has bettered their predecessors all the while maintaining the 98% pass rate.

In a statement the IEB revealed it has achieved an overall pass rate 98,46% in the National Senior Certificate, a slight 0,04% increase from 2022 where is achieved 98,42%.
Of the 15 186 learners that wrote the end of year exams,
- 88.59% of the matric class of 2023 achieved a degree pass – compared to 89.32% in 2022;
- 8.31% achieved a diploma pass – compared to 7.52% in 2022; and
- 1.57% achieved a higher certificate pass – the same level recorded in 2022.

CEO of the IEB, Confidence Dikgole says despite the challenges faced by the class of 2023 in their high school career, which includes the Covid-19 pandemic, the showed dedication and tenacity to achieve the results.
“What however is not often talked about, is the tremendous pressure brought to bear on learners by society. Schools’ experience with young people points to the escalating mental health issues, which is perhaps one of the greatest challenges our youngsters face and does impact their ability to perform at their peak in a high stakes examination”, says Dikgole.
