Since assuming his position in June, Minister Gayton McKenzie in the field of Sport, Arts, and Culture has been actively engaging, including on various social media platforms.

McKenzie has been trending for using social media to update South Africans on almost all his moves in the department. As he promised, last Wednesday, the department released the list of artists and sportspeople who benefitted from its Covid-19 relief programme.

GAYTON MCKENZIE CONTINUES TO TROLL SUNDAY TIMES

At the weekend, Sunday Times said if Gayton McKenzie is so desperate to become a popular minister there must be positive interventions he can make in his department without exploiting the suffering of artists.

In response, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader said some expected the worst from him and he has disappointed them greatly.

“Prepare to make me ‘Mampara of the Year’ because I am going to deliver greatly and make things better for artist, creatives, sportspeople,” he wrote on X.

DSAC PUBLISHES LIST OF BENEFICIARIES

When questioned about the purpose of publishing the list of beneficiaries McKenzie said they already have people who came forward that didn’t receive money nor applied but are listed as having received.

He added that there are people who are not aligned to the arts who received money, and there are people who are not from SA who also benefitted.

“We will not be deterred, this is not your money, this is not my money, this is public money and the public must know who got money from them. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture must show that they were there for artist during the worst times and also expose those that misused the opportunity,” he wrote on X.

Additionally, McKenzie also announced that he stopped trips for super fans and will redirect the funds to artists and athletes.

“I have stopped all trips for super fans; we have athletes and artists who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions; how do we justify paying for fans? We shall no longer be paying for these trips and will use that money where it’s needed the most,” he said.
