Several controversial figures were reportedly interviewed for the Eskom CEO post earlier this month, replacing Andre De Ruyter.
As Eskom continues battling to keep the lights on, the power utility is, at the same time, on the hunt for a new Group CEO. Eskom announced Calib Cassim as its Interim Group Chief Executive Officer after Andre De Ruyter resigned in February.
De Ruyter has been vocal about what drove him to resign, having revealed the extent of corruption plaguing Eskom. He released his book Truth to Power in May 2023, which shed light on some explosive allegations he first made during an interview with eNCA.

WHO WILL BE ESKOM’S NEXT CEO?
While Cassim is holding the fort, Sunday World reports that two former executives at Eskom are being considered to take up the CEO position. According to the publication, former CEO Tshediso Matona and former group executive for capital Dan Marokane are vying for the top job.
Both Matona and Marokane worked at Eskom during the state capture era and walked away with several millions of rands after parting ways with the parastatal. They featured quite extensively in the State Capture Commission of Inquiry as their testimonies were critical in unpacking the level of corruption that went on at Eskom during the Gupta’s looting spree.
They were reportedly interviewed in the beginning of May. The appointment of any of them will likely spark outrage as Eskom had previously indicated it would not be considering any executives who were part of the state capture-era.
