“On behalf of the National Department of Health and in my own name, I would like to wish the Archbishop well as he recovers after successful surgery.

“We wish you a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loving and much supportive family during this trying times. Get well soon,” Minister Motsoaledi said in a statement on Thursday.

According to reports the procedure was aimed at addressing the cause of recurring infections he has battled since last year. The cause of the infections has not been disclosed.

The 84-year-old Nobel peace prize winner admitted himself to hospital on 24 August 2016. At the time his daughter, Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, said in a statement that he was expected to remain there for two weeks.

The respected clergyman has been living with prostate cancer for over 20 years, but his family has said this ailment is not related to that.

Through his Facebook page, Tutu said on Thursday morning: “Thank you so very much to all who have sent good wishes and prayers for my health. God bless you! #OneFamily #GodsFamily.”
