Good news for SASSA SRD grant recipients
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has delivered on Cyril Ramaphosa’s word to increase the SASSA SRD grant in 2024.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has followed up on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s word to increase the SASSA SRD grant. Godongwana revealed the increase at the National Assembly.
SRD R350 GRANT INCREASE
According to SA News, the SRD grant will, as of 1 April, see an increase of R20.
“I am pleased to say that we have found consensus that in between, subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security [programme], we’ll increase the R350 to R370 by the 1st of April this year. That is part of the progressive realisation of the basic rights of our people,” he said.
The SASSA SRD grant follows the same suit as other ordinary welfare grants which are also set to increase in April. Godongwana announced this during his Budget Speech in February.
The increases to be implemented during this year are as follows:
- An increase of R100 for old age, war veterans, disability and care dependency grants. This amount will be divided into R90 effective from April and R10 effective October;
- A R50 increase to the foster care grant; and
- A R20 increase to the child support grant.
SASSA MEANS TEST
According to Ground Up, between seven and eight million South Africans receive the SASSA SRD grant. The varying number of beneficiaries due to the qualification criteria.
To qualify for the SASSA SRD grant, beneficiaries must have incoming funds in their bank accounts of no more than R624 for that particular month.
The grant which was set to come to an end in March, has been extended to March 2025.
