George building collapse: Death toll rises to nine

The death toll from the rescued workers of the collapse site in George has risen to nine on Friday morning.
ONE OF THE CRITICALLY INJURED WORKERS HAS DIED
According to Debra Sauer, Communications Officer of the George Municipality, one of the critically injured workers died in hospital.
Sauer said 44 workers were still unaccounted for on Friday morning.
“The rescue operation has reached 88 hours, as of 6:25 on 10 May.”
Debra Sauer said.
She said big earth-moving machinery arrived last night, including two five-ton excavators, three 20-ton excavators with hammers and buckets, a three-cube front-end loader, and trucks for extraction and clearing.
She said the rescue operation continues to be a multi-agency approach involving local excavation contractors and the District Roads Engineer.

The public should note that the delivery point for donations has been relocated from 79 Victoria Street to the AGS Church Soteria at 27 Victoria Street.
George Municipality provided the following list as a guideline for sustenance donations for the emergency teams as the rescue effort at the site of the collapsed building in Victoria Street continues:
- drinking water,
- energy drinks,
- wine gums, and
- food.
Gift of the Givers and Herman Pienaar of LoveGeorge are manning the delivery point and will keep it operational throughout the rescue period.

They are also in need of the following safety equipment:
- helmets,
- safety goggles,
- clipboards,
- headlamps, and
- construction gloves.
These must be delivered to GRDM Fire Station, Pearl Road, Tamsui, Industria.
