Gayton McKenzie advocates for the immediate implementation of VAR in South Africa
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie is actively pushing for the introduction of VAR in South African football after facing criticism over its absence.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie is calling for the rapid implementation of VAR in South African football.
Minister McKenzie has confirmed that he is actively engaging with both the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to expedite the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in South Africa. McKenzie’s initiative follows widespread criticism over the absence of VAR, especially after a dramatic Betway Premiership clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at a sold-out FNB Stadium last weekend.
“All football-loving fans know that the time for VAR has arrived in SA football. We need VAR & we need it now. Those meetings start now because we are not a 10th world country. I shall report back soonest after meeting SAFA & the PSL this week,” McKenzie stated, emphasising the urgency of the matter, as quoted by iDiski Times.
Update on VAR progress
In a recent update, McKenzie revealed that he has thoroughly reviewed the presentation and budget necessary to fund the VAR implementation. His commitment to enhancing the integrity of the game signals a significant step forward for South African football.

In other football news, Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela shared insights into the team’s immediate recognition of the quality of their coach, Jose Riveiro. As Riveiro approaches his fifth domestic cup final, boasting four trophies since his appointment, he aims to lead Pirates to a historic three-peat of the MTN8.
Despite not yet contending for the league title, Pirates have generated new optimism with a perfect start to the league season, securing three wins from three matches and qualifying for the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2018.
“How did we know we had a good coach? From the first day, I’ve sat here so many times to give credit to the coach and technical team on how we prepare for matches and how everyone is involved within the group,” Maela explained. He praised Riveiro’s inclusive coaching style, stating, “He gives everyone the platform to express themselves.”
Bright future ahead
Maela continued, highlighting the bond formed with the coaching staff: “From the first day, we knew we had a top coach, a good human being, a father figure to us.” He expressed pride in the team’s journey, despite its ups and downs, and acknowledged Riveiro’s demanding yet supportive approach: “You can see how prepared he is, with training sessions every day and how much he demands the best from us.”
