Water contamination, originating from a collapsed sewage pipe, has plunged several areas in Emfuleni Municipality.

Moreover, Beverly Hills, Sonder Water, Graceland, and Lakeside—expierenced water service interruptions.

This setback follows a prior municipal advisory urging residents to cease water usage due to the contamination threat.

JOINT INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO CONTAMINATION SOURCE BY MUNICIPALITY AND RAND WATER

Makhosonke Sangweni, the municipal spokesperson, disclosed ongoing investigations into the contamination’s origin in collaboration with Rand Water.

Sangweni highlighted Rand Water’s meticulous collection of daily samples from various locations, maintaining rigorous protocols to ensure accuracy and reliability.

In response to the water contamination crisis, technicians have undertaken extensive measures. This includes the installation of a scouring valve and fire hydrants, refurbishment of valve chambers, replacement of valves and the Palm Spring water meter, and repair of leaks within the 400 mm steel pipeline. Additionally, the pipeline underwent disinfection post-repairs.

Sangweni reassured residents, stating, “Since the technicians have installed a scouring valve and fire hydrants, refurbished all valve chambers, replaced all valves and the Palm Spring water meter, and repaired leaks within the 400 mm steel pipeline and disinfected the pipeline after repairs.”

Despite these efforts, experts are diligently monitoring water quality. Sangweni emphasised a substantial improvement, with Total Coliform and E. Coli counts dropping to undetectable levels. However, ongoing sampling and analysis are vital to ensuring sustained water quality restoration.

COMMUNITY UPDATES: PROGRESS REPORT ON WATER SAFETY RESTORATION AND VIGILANCE ENCOURAGED
