The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape, along with all enforcement agencies in Cape Town, says it has developed an “operational plan” to prepare for the approved planned marches to national parliament on Monday and Tuesday (07 and 08 August 2017). See Events below.
The protests are largely calling for the removal of South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma as Parliament will vote on a Motion of No Confidence on Tuesday.
SAPS said in a statement Sunday afternoon that the plan has been developed under the auspices of the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJOINTS).
The Joint Operational Centre (JOC) will be activated on Monday morning and police and other security personnel will maintain a visible presence at identified strategic positions in an effort to ensure safety and security for all, said SAPS.
“The other objective of the deployments will be to ensure free flow of traffic. Road closures in and around the CBD will be made available by the City of Cape Town’s traffic services.”
Business owners are advised to exercise discretion in relation to operating hours on the days in question.
March organisers and participants are urged to conduct themselves within the parameters of the law.
“As law enforcement agencies within the ProvJOINTS we recognise citizens’ right to protest. However the right to protest comes with responsibility. Destruction of property, looting and other unlawful conduct will not be tolerated,” said SAPS.
PLANNED MARCH EVENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA
Monday 7 August 2017
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has called on its 200,000 members to join the #UniteBehind march to Parliament in Cape Town.
The #UniteBehind march is organised by 25 civil society and religious organisations, and will be joined by former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebesi Jonas… who now describes himself as an “activist in South Africa”.
Jonas – who allegedly turned down a bribe from the powerful Gupta family (which is accused of having captured Zuma and the state) – called on the support of South Africans, saying this will be a “significant milestone for the country” and probably what could become “a national movement that begins to write a new agenda for the country”.

Cosatu said in a statement on Friday that it is “calling on its members to support the protest on Monday calling for the removal of President Zuma” but that this “protest must not be used to effect a regime change, but to deal with the real issue of Zuma and the general corrupt state of South Africa.
“This is a non partisan action that should not undermine the ANC, who we wish to restore and return to its former glory, as the champion of the hopes and dreams of our people.”
