Four Signal Hill pickpockets have been arrested
SANParks has confirmed the arrest of four individuals linked with pickpocketing on Signal Hill in Cape Town.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed the apprehension of four pickpockets on Signal Hill in the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).
The summer months saw a huge spike in muggings and other criminal activities in the TMNP. Park authorities have had to remain on alert after a series of reported pickpocketing incidents in the Signal Hill area.
Signal Hill is a popular viewpoint for Cape Town sunsets year-round. Visitors tend to gather and picnic on the paragliders’ launch pad.
A PICKPOCKET STAKE-OUT
A focused operation by the Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) team led to the successful arrest of four individuals who were posing as Park visitors.
The suspects were closely monitored during the stake-out for several hours, until they tried to steal a cell phone from one of the Park visitors.
The SEAM Team members reacted swiftly and swooped in on all four pickpockets while they were attempting to flee.
The case was reported to the local South African Police Services at the Cape Town Police Station.
PARK VISITORS ASKED TO REMAIN VIGILANT
SANParks released a statement urging all Park users to exercise caution while enjoying outdoor activities in TMNP. To ensure safety and security, SANParks has asked visitors to adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Stay aware of your surroundings: While enjoying the stunning views, please be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to the people nearby and be cautious of any suspicious activity.
- Secure your valuables: Do not leave your valuables unattended. Keep your belongings secure on your person at all times, and consider using anti-theft bags or pouches.
- Report suspicious activity: If you observe any suspicious behavior or feel uncomfortable, please report it to park rangers or local authorities immediately on 086 110 6417. Your vigilance can help keep the park safe for everyone.
- Be cautious of individuals offering help or assistance: Pickpockets often work in groups, and distraction is one of their tactics.
Your safety is our top priority, and we want every visitor to have a memorable and secure experience in Table Mountain National Park. By following these guidelines and remaining alert, you can help us ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for all.
Last November, Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy expressed his concern over criminal activities on Table Mountain and how they had the potential to dent the image of Cape Town’s tourism sector following the muggings of three athletes during the Ultra-trail Cape Town (UTCT) race.
