Residents of eThekwini are advised to brace themselves for a planned power outage scheduled for 11 May, from 9:00 to approximately 17:00.

The interruption in electricity supply is necessitated by the imperative need for eThekwini Electricity to replace secondary cables at the Mayville Substation, essential for electrical protection schemes. Consequently, it is imperative to temporarily suspend electricity supply at the Mayville Substation to execute this crucial maintenance work.

AREAS TO BE AFFECTED BY THE POWER OUTAGE IN ETHEKWINI

Areas likely to be impacted by this power outage include Cato Manor and Chesterville Extension. However, customers not switched off by 9:15 can assume that they will not be affected by the scheduled outage.

During this power outage period, the public is strongly advised to exercise caution and treat all electrical installations as live to prevent any accidents or mishaps.

“During this outage, the public is advised to treat all electrical installations as live,” said the eThekwini Municipality.

In a related development, the city authorities informed the public about an unexpected outage due to an in-service transformer tripping at the Ntuzuma Substation on Tuesday evening. This incident resulted in the loss of supply to several areas. Following an onsite investigation, technicians identified a suspected fault on the 11 kV transformer loop cable, necessitating testing and repairs before supply can be restored.

INTENSIFIED EFFORTS TO RESTORE POWER IN AFFECTED AREAS

Efforts to rectify the situation have been intensified, with teams dispatched urgently to execute the necessary repairs. While initial estimates suggested that supply would be restored to affected areas by 6:00 on Wednesday, the timeline was extended due to continuous efforts to address the electricity problem at the Ntuzuma Substation.

Areas impacted by this extended power outage include Besters, Bhambayi, Dubes Land, Ekuphakameni, Emachobeni, Emaplazini, Ezimangweni, Inanda Glebe, Inanda (A&B), Kwamashu (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,J,K,L,M,N,P), Lindelani-D, Mshayazafe,. Newtown-B, Nhlungwane, Ntuzuma(A,B,E,E,F,G,H), Phola Mission, Siyanda, and Soweto.

Residents are urged to make necessary preparations for the power outage and exercise patience as authorities work tirelessly to restore electricity supply to affected areas as soon as possible.
