eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda facing the axe
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has survived a vote of no confidence before and the DA has once again called for his resignation.
The Democratic Alliance has once again called for eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda to step down. Premier candidate in KwaZulu-Natal, Chris Pappas, claims the mayor fails to tackle issues, leading to a ‘collapse’ of the city.
Since the beginning of the year, water supply outages have plagued the metro’s northern suburbs.
ETHEKWINI RESIDENTS HEALTH AT RISK
Recently, industrial action brought service delivery in the metro to a standstill. Uncollected refuse-strewn streets around the city are an eyesore.
Pappas says the pile-up of waste across the city is a health risk for residents.
“This not only detracts from the beauty of our city but also poses significant health risks as it becomes a breeding ground for pests and diseases,” says Pappas.
Pappas claims that the current leadership is failing residents by neglecting them and ignoring water and electricity outages.
“This is not just a failure; it is a dereliction of the duty owed to every citizen of eThekwini.”
“The only viable solution to this escalating crisis is for the mayor to step down and make way for a leader ready and able to rescue this city. The mayor has failed in his executive duties, and his continued presence in office is a disservice to the people of eThekwini.”
KAUNDA SURVIVES MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE
In January, Kaunda narrowly survived a vote of no confidence brought on by the DA and Inkatha Freedom Party.
According to IOL, DA eThekwini leader Thabani Mthethwa claims that Kaunda is an absent mayor.
“It must be noted that the motion to remove Mayor Kaunda came as a result of his poor performance since his election in 2019. The ANC’s Kaunda has ensured that eThekwini does not provide services to the people of this city,” Mthethwa alleges.
