An Eskom executive with top security clearance is reportedly a person of interest to the police. According to a City Press report, the individual is linked to alleged sabotage at power stations for financial gain.
POLICE INVESTIGATION UNCOVERS ALLEGED POWER STATION SABOTAGE SCHEME
City Press reported that the police are looking to arrest the Eskom executive as they may be the key player in targeted sabotage at certain power stations that cause load shedding.
The executive allegedly assembled a team of engineers and artisans to cause breakdowns at power stations, and garners income from the manufactured crises. The executive allegedly works with a forensic auditor.
After the breakdowns are triggered, the executive allegedly uses their influence to call an emergency forensic audit that is given to the co-conspirator.
Minister of Police Bheki Cele confirmed that the executive was a person of interest, “and the interest has grown.” The newspaper report said leaked WhatsApp correspondence formed part of the police investigation.
SAFTU DEMANDS JUSTICE AND CALLS FOR ARREST OF THE ESKOM EXECUTIVE AND CO-CONSPIRATORS
South Africa’s second-largest trade union federation, SAFTU, condemned the acts of sabotage and called for the Eskom executive and all co-conspirators to be arrested and “sent to prison for a long time” if found guilty.
“SAFTU further demands that all assets of those involved in the sabotage must be attached to recoup all rands and cents lost in the process of forensic auditing and repairing,” said SAFTU General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.
Vavi added that selfish interests were behind the corruption at Eskom, with individuals enriching themselves at the expense of the entire country.
The governing ANC also received a tongue-lashing from the trade union federation. Vavi declared, “ANC is the biggest sabotage” and accused the party of manufacturing a crisis due to its “long-standing commitment to neoliberal capitalism.”
“Eskom Executive and his troops must be aggressively pursued to bring them to book, but voters must vote ANC out of power next year. It has created an “enabling environment” for the alleged corrupt activities of the Executive to thrive whilst simultaneously demonstrating its inability to run the affairs of our country,” said Vavi.
The SAFTU General Secretary was expelled from the ANC’s tripartite alliance partner, COSATU, in March 2015. He was the Secretary-General.
