Egg prices continue to skyrocket
Diets and eating habits may quickly change, as South African try to come to terms with the latest egg prices of the favourite breakfast item.
After weeks of searching, Gauteng residents have been left with rather expensive egg on their face as egg prices continue to soar at almost double the price.

Earlier earlier this year, the poultry industry warned of the impending shortage of chickens and eggs as the industry battles an avian flu outbreak.
This particular strain is said to be a quick spreading and has already affects farmers mainly in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West.

This week social media users were shocked by the new price of eggs.
Viral pictures taken from a Superspar in Midrand shows a price of 30 large eggs selling for R129,99 while 60 eggs sell for R239,99.
However just two months ago, 30 eggs were being priced at around R70.
GOVERNMENT PLANS
Following a meeting with the South African Poultry Association and the Department of Agriculture and Land Reform, minister Thoko Didiza, says the department will put measures to ensure a stable supply of eggs.

In a statementthe department says,”It was evident from the engagement that the main challenge is primarily on the egg production side, where there are supply constraints in some regions of the country. In response to this challenge, the Minister is focusing on measures to improve the availability of egg supply to consumers and simultaneously putting measures to contain the spread of the disease.”

“Moreover, the Minister is embarking on the efficiency improvement in issuing import permits for egg products to ensure sufficient supplies for consumers. In addition, the Minister is looking at the possibility of vaccination and currently reviewing applications by various suppliers,” the department said in a statement.”
