The British comedian and actor Eddie Izzard has begun an attempt to run 27 marathons in South Africa – or 1,126 kilometres – in 27 days, one for each of the years Nelson Mandela was in jail, and all in aid of Sport Relief.
The British non-profit Sport Relief organises events where people run for charity, and half the proceeds go to people in need in the UK and half to people in need around the world. According to Sports Relief, its work has allowed 189,000 children to attend school and get an education in the last two years, among other projects.
Izzard has done ultra-running like this before. In 2009 he completed 43 marathons in just 51 days, raising over £1 million. Good luck, Eddie!
