As the holiday season approaches, residents and tourists alike are eager to know which Durban beaches and public pools are safe for swimming. The eThekwini Municipality has provided an updated list, ensuring visitors can plan their outings accordingly.
Which beaches are closed?
While many of Durban’s iconic beaches remain open, five have been flagged for poor water quality and are currently off-limits for swimming. These include:
- Country Club Beach
- Thekwini Beach
- Laguna Beach
- Reunion Beach
- Doonside Beach
Despite the swimming restrictions, the municipality assures that visitors can still enjoy other recreational activities on these beaches.
Where can you take a dip?
For those eager to cool off in the ocean, the good news is that 18 beaches have been declared safe for swimming. These beaches are monitored for water quality and are open between 06:00 and 18:30. The list includes:

In addition to the beaches, the municipality has confirmed that 40 swimming pools across Durban are now open to the public. These include:

Swimming pools are open from 06:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and from 09:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays.
