In a dramatic turn of events, a massive fire erupted at China Mall Springfield Park in Durban on Wednesday morning, shrouding parts of the renowned shopping complex, China City, in flames.
Swift action by eThekwini Fire Services firefighters was pivotal in tackling the ferocious blaze.

Amid the tumult, shop owners grappled with challenges as access to their businesses was cut off by the sealed building.

This unfortunate event echoes a previous incident in January 2022 when another building on the western side of the Durban Central Business District fell victim to a destructive fire.
A subsequent report from a structural engineer advocated for the complete demolition of the severely damaged structure.

DEMOLITION OF THE DURBAN’S DAMAGED CHINA CITY MALL
In a recent statement, the City announced the expedited demolition decision. Citing various challenges stemming from the compromised building’s continued existence.
“Issues such as illegal dumping, unsanctioned public use, the risk of structural collapse as the building is unstable, traffic congestion, business disruptions due to prolonged road closures, and reputational concerns have compelled the Municipality to take swift action.”

In response to owners’ inaction, eThekwini revealed it sought a court order to enforce the building’s demolition. The Municipality emphasises the necessity of swift action to address the multifaceted challenges posed by the unstable structure.
