Diwali is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness and is celebrated around the world, including here in South Africa with lights, sweets, and gatherings – and sometimes fireworks.

While all the fun is being had, it’s also crucial to remember that many of our four-legged friends – both pets and wildlife – are deeply affected by the loud noises and flashing lights that often accompany the festivities. Here are five effective ways you can help keep animals safe and comfortable during Diwali…

1. Create a safe space indoors

Prepare a designated, quiet area indoors where pets can retreat. Choose a room that is well-insulated and far from external noise, such as a bedroom or a basement.

Fill this space with familiar items like blankets, toys, and bedding, which can help create a calming environment.

Use white noise machines, gentle music, or even a fan to drown out the sound of fireworks. Covering windows can also prevent pets from seeing flashes of light that might startle them.

2. Exercise pets early in the day

Take your dogs for a long walk or spend extra time playing with your cats before festivities begin. Exercise helps expend their energy, which can help them feel more settled and ready to rest during peak celebration hours.

For pet birds, spend time interacting with them in a secure indoor area to keep them engaged, so they aren’t startled by sudden noises later in the evening.

3. Plan for a quiet night at home or arrange pet care

If you are celebrating and will be out for a large part of the evening, prepare your pet’s safe space well in advance and check in frequently if possible. Ensuring someone is present for your pet can help them manage the stress more easily.

Some animals feel more secure with familiar company during stressful situations. Being with them on the night of Diwali can provide them with the comfort they need.

If possible, plan to stay home with your pets during peak fireworks hours, offering them comfort and reassurance. For those unable to stay home, consider asking a friend or hiring a trusted pet sitter who can watch over your pet, keeping them calm and safe.

4. Use calming products and techniques

Animals, particularly dogs and cats, can benefit from certain calming aids that are designed to reduce stress and anxiety.

Products like calming collars, anxiety wraps, and pet-safe essential oils (such as lavender) can have a soothing effect. Pheromone diffusers, which release scents that mimic natural calming pheromones, can also be effective for dogs and cats.

For dogs, try a snug-fitting vest, such as a ThunderShirt, which can provide a comforting sensation similar to swaddling. However, always consult a veterinarian before using any new calming products.

5. Keep identification and contact information updated

Even with the best precautions, some animals may still get spooked and run away. Ensuring pets have up-to-date identification increases the chances of a safe return if they get lost.

Make sure that pets are wearing collars with tags that include current contact information. For added security, consider microchipping your pet. Microchips are safe, effective, and can be scanned by most veterinarians or animal shelters.

If your pet is already microchipped, confirm that your contact information is current with the microchip registry. This small step can make a huge difference in reuniting you with a pet who might get lost during the celebrations.
