Ebrahim Patel, the minister of trade, industry, and competition, made the news while touring a facility in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.

CEO of Defy Appliances Mustafa Soylu, management, employees, and NUMSA shop stewards hosted Patel during his visit.
Regarding South Africa’s progress in sustainable development and green technologies, a significant announcement was made.

A significant step will be taken to promote eco-friendly options in the appliance business when the Ladysmith plant starts producing refrigerators and freezers that can run totally on solar energy.
WHEN ARE THESE SOLAR FRIENDLY APPLIANCES EXPECTED TO BE SOLD IN STORES?
The ground-breaking products, which are expected to be sold in stores by January 2024, are designed to enable families to completely green their home food cooling systems.
Patel offered his support for this outstanding development.

“Climate change necessitates a comprehensive transformation of the technologies utilized both at home and within the industry. South Africa is actively ensuring the production of future technologies and meeting the demand for lower-emission consumer products,” he said.
WHAT DID PATEL SAY ABOUT THE NEW PRODUCTS?
Patel emphasized the huge improvement over Defy’s earlier hybrid units, which needed a portion of their energy from the grid.

The new units, built to run only on solar energy, will include an integrated battery system, increasing their effectiveness and environmental friendliness.
“I am delighted that Defy is focusing on making these fridges and freezers affordable, enabling a broader consumer base to transition to green appliances,” Patel said.
