Curro ‘FIRES’ Shanette Tiquin who called black teacher ‘monkey’

Shanette Tiquin, who is an executive at Curro Protea Glen has reportedly been fired for calling an educator at the school a monkey.

The executive head at Curro Protea Glen, Shanette Tiquin has reportedly been fired after a teacher, Nonkululeko Gwatyu revealed she called her a monkey.

SHANETTE TIQUIN DISMISSED BY CURRO

Sunday World reported on Friday, 11 August that Shanette Tiquin, who is the executive head of Curro Academy in Protea Glen, Soweto has been dismissed from her job after calling a black educator a monkey.

The publication adds that Tiquin was subjected to a disciplinary, which was chaired by advocate Mandla Mkhatshwa of the Johannesburg Bar two weeks ago.

Curro Holdings’ head of operations Fergus Sampson outlined the purpose of the disciplinary hearing which states that the school does not condone racism.

Tequin was reportedly charged with gross misconduct in terms of the Curro anti-discriminatory policy, which rejects all forms of discrimination.

Sampson revealed in a statement: “After considering all evidence and arguments, the chairperson found the senior staff member guilty of gross misconduct for violating Curro’s anti-discriminatory policy and recommended that she be dismissed.”

Tiquin was found guilty of directing a racially offensive term at the teacher and dismissed the staff member’s argument that she used the term ‘monkey’ to refer to herself.

Nonkululeko Gwatyu, who uses the handle @lekokanele on Twitter revealed that Tiquin, who is an executive head at Curro Protea Glen in Soweto called her a monkey on the school’s premises.

Another social media user @moleboheng_L revealed: “She’ll never change. She’s been called out before when she was my principal in high school.”

The South African reached out to Shanette Tiquin, who was not available for a comment at the time of publishing this article.

EFF REACTS TO ‘MONKEY’ STATEMENTS

The Citizen reported on 7 August that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng called for Curro’s executive head Shanette Tiquin to be fired and criminally charged with hate speech for calling after the black female teacher, Nonkululeko Gwatyu a monkey.

“The EFF calls for the removal of the racist Mrs. Tiquin as executive head of the school … with immediate effect.”

“We further call on the South African Human Rights [Commission] to pay specific attention to cases of racism leveled against Curro Holdings as these incidents are not isolated.”

“Racism must be criminalised and perpetrators who seek to humiliate and insult the dignity of black people be made to pay the harshest penalty,” said the political party in a statement.
