Crime Stats: Durban is SA’s murder capital
How safe is your city? Inanda and Umlazi police station in Durban record the highest murder statistics than anywhere else in the country
Durban is popularly known as South Africa’s playground, with its long stretch of beaches and sunshine almost all year round. However the city’s ugly side has shown itself as the metro becomes the murder capital of the country.

This is according to the first quarter crime stats announced by Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola on Friday.
WHERE ARE MURDERS MOST RECORDED

In the recorded months between April and June 2023, Inanda police station in the north of Durban recorded the highest number of murders in the country with 81 murders. This is an increase of 15 if compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile,Umlazi police station, despite a drop of 21 murder, came in at number two with 62 murders, compared to 83 last year.
Three Police stations in Cape Town district make up the top five. Delft, Gugulethu and Harare recorded 61,59 and 68 murders respectively.
Delft and Umlazi police stations were the only two stations within the top 5 that reported decreases in their murder rate.

In May, police Minister Bheki Cele announced the crime stats for the first three months of the year, which, compared to the latest statistics, Umlazi and Inanda still remain in the top two.
Gugulethu, fourth, in the latest statistics with 59 cases, did not even make the top 10 earlier this year with 35 case. An increase of 24 murders.
Harare came in a 11th with 41 murders and has seen a jump to 58 murders in the proceeding three months.
