Cape Winelands Airport project ready to begin

Construction on the new Cape Winelands Airport is officially scheduled to begin this year

This is according to recent reports, which say that the Cape Winelands Airport is closer to reality with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process nearing completion and funding arrangements taking shape.

As per Travel News, construction is planned to begin later this year, pending regulatory approvals, including the Environmental Impact Assessment expected by mid-2025. Completion on the airport is targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.

“We are really excited about the airport expansion. There are so many benefits to a commercial airport in this part of the region and we know that this development will be a catalyst for growth,” Deon Cloete, the managing director of Cape Winelands Airport previously stated.

“We see ourselves as an important part of the regional value chain, which is a responsibility we take seriously,” Cloete added.

What can we expect from the new Airport?

The R7 billion airport upgrade and development will include a 3.5km runway, a terminal building, retail outlets, an aircraft hangar, an adjacent hotel as well as vineyards as part of the landscaping aesthetics to portray the region’s wine culture.

There will also be open spaces that include a plaza, a conference centre, a wine-tasting experience, an outdoor amphitheatre for events of up to 5 000 people, and an aviation museum.

In the controlled airside area of the airport, a portion of the land will include a botanical garden with a diverse collection of indigenous fynbos.

The airport will also offer a range of contemporary amenities and services designed to enhance the travel experience.

These include efficient check-in counters with advanced technology for swift processing, as well as spacious and comfortable waiting lounges with ergonomic seating.
