Snow may be expected in certain areas of Gauteng and Mpumalanga this weekend as a cold front moves in.

SA Weather Service says temperatures are expected to drop significantly in the northern and eastern parts of the country. The cold front will reach Gauteng, North West and Limpopo on Saturday, 21 September.

SAWS Forecaster Luthando Masimini said the cold front might bring snow in parts of Mpumalanga.

“We do expect cold conditions with this system and even snow in places over the east that will spread now to the eastern escarpment areas,” Masimini said as per Jacaranda FM.

“Looks like the snow is likely to infiltrate the interior, even the areas close to Standerton may get some snowfall tomorrow (Friday) from the system. The system is expected to exit our area by Sunday, but before that, we’re still expecting some rainfall over the three provinces, with Gauteng expecting isolated showers and thundershowers.”

According to Regional forecaster Gauteng Weather, a small chance of snow was expected in the province on Saturday.

“Models still picking up a small chance of light snow/sleet for Gauteng overnight into Saturday. Forecast can however change,” it shared on the X platform.

For Pretoria, temperatures are expected to peak at 21°C, with a minimum of 8°C. Johannesburg will be much cooler with a maximum of 15. The SAWS has predicted a 60% chance of rain for Friday, going into Saturday.
