The City of Tshwane has been actively pursuing unpaid power bills to collect the owed money.

Tshwane mayor Celliers Brink visited properties in Brooklyn, Waterkloof Glen and Elardus Park on Tuesday to disconnect power to homes that owe hundreds of thousands of rand.

THE CITY OF TSHWANE DISCONNECTS ELECTRICITY

The City of Tshwane has disconnected power to over 400 homes in a Pretoria golf estate due to unpaid bills totaling over R16 million from illegal connections. This action is part of the city’s effort to address its R1.6-billion debt to Eskom.

The municipality visited homes and found that numerous houses had bypassed their electricity meters.

The City has been in disagreement with Eskom due to outstanding electricity bills.

Eskom warned of power disconnection to the capital city as the municipality struggled to settle its R1.6 billion debt.

DEFAULTERS FACE PROPERTY LOSS RISK

Residents in financial trouble with Tshwane Municipality over unpaid bills face property loss as the municipality plans legal action to recover debts by selling their properties.

Reported by IOL Brink on Tuesday during the ongoing Tshwane Ya Tima campaign, the municipality threatened legal action against defaulting customers to recover R23.3 billion owed to the city.

The campaign aimed to recover outstanding municipal debts by cutting off electricity to residents and businesses in arrears. It focused on those in the inner-city, Pretoria West, and Pretoria East.

Illegal connections to properties were identified as a major issue for the municipality. Brink promised consequences for those involved in illegal connections and for those refusing to pay rates and taxes, reported IOL.

“It is important to state that we are not just going to ignore that; we are going to make a criminal case on every instance of illegal connections,” said Brink.

Brink mentioned some of the people refused to settle payments to the municipality as they installed solar panels at home.

As part of the campaign, he expressed gratitude to those who continue to settle their monthly municipal bills.
