End of beach and pool season in Cape Town

Lifeguards wrapped up their duties on Monday, 21 April, officially closing the City of Cape Town’s busy summer beach and pool season. Most public swimming pools also shut their gates as the city transitions into the cooler months.

Throughout the season, lifeguards actively prevented incidents, helped beachgoers, and responded to emergencies across Cape Town’s coastline and public pools.

As the off-season begins, officials are urging the public to remain cautious around water, warning that the risk of drowning remains high without lifeguard supervision.

“Don’t become another statistic. Please obey warning signs, avoid swimming on isolated beaches and always remain within your swimming ability. Learning to identify rip currents can save your life,” the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham said.

As per these statistics, there were 63 drowning incidents recorded during the season, with, sadly, 14 of these being fatal.

Which pools are closed and which remain open?

The City has said that most of their public pools have now closed for the winter season, with the exception of indoor pools and the Sea Point swimming pool, which operate throughout the year.

Cape Town’s indoor pools that will remain open include:

  • Blue Downs,
  • Long Street,
  • Retreat, and
  • Strand.
