The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate says waste services may be impacted by the public holiday on voting day on Wednesday, 29 May. However, services will continue as normal, and collection teams might arrive earlier than expected.

South Africa will hold National and Provincial Elections on Wednesday.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY MAY IMPACT CAPE TOWN WASTE SERVICES

In formal areas, the metro municipality said services will continue according to public holiday arrangements.

The municipality also reminded residents of the following:

  • Please place your bin outside for collection by 6:00 on the scheduled refuse collection day.
  • Please do not wait for the refuse collection vehicle to enter your street before taking the bin to the pavement. The collection teams might arrive much earlier than usual on these days, as there is likely to be reduced traffic congestion on the roads.
  • Should there be delays and refuse is not collected on the scheduled day, please do not leave it outside overnight. Take it out again each day until it has been collected.

WHAT ABOUT INFORMAL AREAS?

The City of Cape Town said waste services will continue according to public holiday arrangements.

The public holiday will not affect area cleaning and door-to-door refuse collection services. If unforeseeable circumstances prevent the collection of bagged waste, residents can take it to the closest shipping container.

The municipality also urged residents in both formal and informal areas not resort to dumping.

Notably, drop-off facilities will be closed on Wednesday.

“All of these City sites, which accept recyclables, will be closed on the day. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” the City of Cape Town said.
